Cyborg voices, dance tutorials, dance moms, youtube personalities,

chair dance improvisations and monologues come together in ‘Laissez-faire’; a solo performance for Edmonton artist Ainsley Hillyard.

Developed through digital collage ‘Laissez-faire’ translates content from the web onto the adult performing body. This solo performance situates dance within the domestic space through vernacular movement vocabularies and the architecture of the home.  Laissez-faire navigates the relationship between ‘showing’ confidence and ‘demonstrating’ skill in the performance of movement. Does one ever know the dance, or is the dance as process a becoming? ‘Laissez-faire’ reveals a shifting rolodex of impulses with text and movement emergent from the web. The rich confluence of sources portrays a contemporary representation of dance within private and public daily life.
