Current physical distancing guidelines and initiatives launched by our funding bodies have created a pressure/demand for both artists and organizations to move their artistic activities online. While they attempt to pivot, it is important to acknowledge that there are artists who have been working on the relationship between dance and the digital realm long before the Covid outbreak. This will be a space to unpack our thoughts about the digital and reflect upon the impact it has on our bodies. What are our anxieties, our fears? What is exciting about digital platforms? What can we learn about the body through technology that the studio doesn’t offer? We want this to be a check-in with dance folks to see how they are feeling about all this. Please bring your questions, thoughts and provocations so that we may collectively consider them when we open up the conversation. About the Artists: Sasha Kleinplatz is a choreographer, teacher and curator based between Montreal and Vancouver, Canada. She is the co-founder (along with partner Andrew Tay) of Wants&Needs danse, a collective focused on creating non-traditional contexts for choreographers to make work, and for audiences to engage with contemporary dance. She is the co-creator of the curatorial projects Piss in the Pool, Short&Sweet, and Total Space Party, initiatives that have been part of numerous festivals, and theatre seasons, and which have also been produced in the United States and Europe. Sasha’s work as a choreographer has toured throughout Canada, and has been supported by the Canada Council, and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. Sasha’s new work Miracle’ing will premiere at Montreal, arts intercultural in Fall 2020 (pandemic willing). Andrew Tay is a hybrid choreographer, performance curator and DJ. In 2005 he co-founded Wants&Needs danse with Sasha Kleinplatz. Since then, they have produced the wildly popular dance events Short & Sweet and Piss in the Pool which take place in non-traditional venues throughout Montreal. His works Fame Prayer / EATING (winner Risk and Innovation Summerworks Performance Festival 2016) and Make Banana Cry (Co-authored with Stephen Thompson) have been presented at the M.A.I and Theatre La Chapelle (MTL) , as well as at festivals like Fierce and Nottdance (UK), These works will continue to tour Europe in 2020. He is currently the artistic curator at the Centre de Creation O Vertigo (CCOV) in Montreal and will be moving to Toronto in August to become the Artistic Director of Toronto Dance Theatre.
