8 DAYS is an intensive encounter open to all artists who place dance & choreography in the foregrounds of their artistic work. This gathering of choreographers is open to artists living and working in Canada and Canadian artists living and working abroad.
The ongoing 8 DAYS project addresses a need for peer-to-peer research and development in the field of dance and choreography in Canada. We seek to further enrich exchanges across and through communities that are difficult to access within the geographic and political particularities of our Canadian context.
Initiated in 2012 by Ame Henderson and Tedd Robinson, the subsequent encounters stem from the growing participants’ desire to continue this artistic exchange.
How dance artists work is intimately related to what they create and what is created is more than the work itself. In making dance-work we are also working on the relationships necessary for the dance-work to exist. Relationships forged in the making of dance are contingent to those methods and circumstances articulated through artistic practice. We understand that theory and practice, talking and making, doing/not doing, our choice to rely, or not, on existing systems, our choice to reflect or not, all interweave through our individual development into the political records of vibrant communities in continuous transformation.
8 DAYS is an opportunity to consider each other as individual makers and interconnected through both our similarities and differences. 8 DAYS also takes seriously the importance of time taken outside the pressures of production-driven work as a way to open space to reflect on one’s current practice and to envision – through dialogue, experimentation, and feisty conviviality – new artistic possibilities.
Selected by open call, six Canadian artists will be invited to join the participants of all the previous 8 DAYS encounters. This year’s selection committee is comprised of five past participants and one invited guest.
For 8 DAYS VI, up to 30 artists will embark on a co-authored adventure influenced by its surroundings, created by those present, and guided by their overlapping and divergent experiences and desires. Participants are asked to arrive with a curiosity and openness about what this encounter might be, a willingness to expose and share, and a rigour around intellectual and artistic exchange.
Each participant is responsible for facilitating or planning a portion of the shared time. Days are primarily structured around group meals; subsistence informs how we can function within a group. The days also include sharing and exploring work and methods, reading, open discussion, as well as time for leisure and personal reflection.
An integral part of 8 DAYS is to respond to the concept of documentation. In broad terms we ask ourselves what is the role of documentation within the expanded fields of dance and choreography. More acutely we ask how participants will individually undertake a thinking around documentation in order to share the experience of 8 DAYS VI and as a inquisition into the role of documentation with regard to current artistic work. Participants propose and create responses specific to 8 DAYS during or immediately following the gathering. This co-authored response is then disseminated via a framework determined by the contributors in order to share the process and its outcomes.
Logistical Details
8 DAYS VI will be held at Artscape Gibraltar Point on Toronto Island. Housed in a former school, Artscape Gibraltar Point, offers 35,000 square feet of multi-use space. Artists will enjoy private accommodations, bright and spacious studios, a shared kitchen and lounge, free wi-fi, and bike rentals. This idyllic beachfront property has the feeling of a remote cottage getaway but is a short fifteen-minute ferry ride from downtown Toronto.
The participating artists should anticipate arriving on June 12th (later in the day) and departing on June 19th 2017. Katie Ward Dance (http://katieward.org/) has applied for funding to cover travel costs and meals. Funding results should be known by the end of March 2017. Participants are encouraged to seek further funding to support their participation. Deadline December 13th, 2016.
Please submit your application along with a recent biography. As the jury changes each year, previous applicants are highly encouraged to re-apply. Detail your current curiosities in relation to the milieu of dance and choreography. A ddress how this encounter might enrich your practice and position yourself in regard to the documentation process. Propose an idea of what you would like to share with the group and what kind of activity you would like to facilitate. Your responses may take the form of a letter of intent, video response(s), audio recording or other support material (or any combination thereof). Please feel free to experiment with whichever method will best allow you to respond to the specific concerns of 8 DAYS and best demonstrate your thoughts and practice. Keep your responses brief and select any support material carefully with the aim of addressing this specific opportunity.

UN RASSEMBLEMENT DE CHORÉGRAPHES À ARTSCAPE GIBRALTAR POINT, TORONTO ISLAND | Du 12 au 19 JUIN 2017
8 DAYS est une rencontre intensive réunissant des artistes qui placent la danse et le chorégraphie au centre de leur pratique. Ce rassemblement convoque des artistes canadiens qui oeuvrent au Canada et à l’étranger. La curiosité, la prise de risque, la réflexion, ainsi qu’un va-et-vient entre théorie, pratique et plaisir seront au coeur de ce séjour sur l’île de Toronto.
8 DAYS, huit jours sans interruption, est une plateforme d’échanges sur la recherche et le développement de la danse et de la chorégraphie au Canada. Nous cherchons à encourager les rencontres entre et avec les communautés plus éloignées, dû à leurs situations géographique et politique.
Mis sur pied par Ame Henderson et Tedd Robinson, le projet itératif répond à un besoin d’échanges chorégraphiques entre pairs au Canada. Ces rencontres sont une manière de mettre en relief la pertinence et l’influence des pratiques artistiques.
La manière avec laquelle l’artiste crée est intimement liée à ce qu’il crée, et ce qu’il crée dépasse l’oeuvre en soi. En effet, à travers la collaboration il y a une relation qui se travaille et qui est nécessaire pour faire exister l’oeuvre. Les contextes et les méthodes de création sont en interdépendance avec la relation qui s’établit entre les participants. La théorie et la pratique, la discussion et la création, l’action et l’inaction et nos choix de dépendre ou non d’un système sont tous des éléments qui s’entrecroisent dans nos apprentissages et dans notre développement à travers le spectre politique des communautés en constante évolution. 8 DAYS invite aussi à la collision de pratiques, à la provocation, à la dynamisation et à se considérer comme des créateurs liés autant par nos similitudes que par nos différences.
8 DAYS se soustrait aux impératifs de production pour créer de l’espace, réfléchir sur son travail et imaginer – par l’entremise du dialogue, de l’expérimentation et d’une franche convivialité – de nouvelles possibilités artistiques.
À 8 DAYS VI, six chorégraphes canadiens, sélectionnés à la suite d’un appel à participants, seront invités à se joindre aux participants des éditions antérieures. Ainsi, une trentaine d’artistes se réuniront pour une aventure co-créée, sensible à son environnement et guidée par les expériences et désirs imbriqués et divergents de chacun. Les artistes sont appelés à être disponibles au partage, rigoureux dans leurs échanges intellectuels et artistiques, et à être ouverts à la forme que prendront les événements. Les journées sont principalement structurées autour de repas en groupe; la subsistance éclaire le fonctionnement de l’assemblée. Les journées sont aussi composées d’exploration de travaux et de méthodes, de lecture, de discussions libres, ainsi que de moments de repos et de réflexions personnelles. Chaque chorégraphe est responsable de mener ou planifier une partie du temps en groupe.
Il est impératif que 8 DAYS se positionne par rapport à la communauté élargie. À cette fin, chaque participant réfléchira à une façon de documenter et à la nécessité de partager leur expérience. Les artistes proposent et créent une documentation particulière pendant ou après l’événement 8 DAYS. Cette documentation cosignée est ensuite diffusée sur une plateforme choisie par les artistes afin de partager le processus et ses résultantes.

Choisissez le support qui vous permettra de répondre précisément à l’invitation et témoignera de vos réflexions et de votre pratique : lettre d’intention, enregistrement vidéo ou audio ou autre matériel (ou toute combinaison de ces éléments).
Le comité de sélection est formé de quatre participants antérieurs et d’un artiste invité. Le comité change d’année en année et ainsi, les artistes ayant posé leur candidature pour une édition antérieure sont encouragés à le faire à nouveau.
